Guide to Mutation of Budgies/Badrika Part 1

What is MUTATION?
Mutation is the type of colour, feather pattern or any distinctive feature a budgie has. Just like we human beings have different races budgies also have different mutations.

Why is it important?
Mutations or colour genetics are important to understand the origins the budgie has. Most importantly some mutations make a budgie really beautiful to look at. Rare mutations increase the value of a budgie to breeders and exhibition breeders.

Now comes the Most Important Part- The different mutations and how to recognize them.

The wildtype (natural-colored or wild occurring) budgerigar's color is called Lightgreen. The original budgie variety is yellow-based with blue feather structure in the body feathers, resulting in the classic green coloration of the main body (yellow+blue=green).
wild type green/classic green

When the yellow colour is absent in some parts it creates a blue colour mutation, when blue is absent it creates yellow mutation.

Guide to Handtaming Budgies/Badrika Part 2

continued from- https://www.blogger.com/blogger.g?blogID=8433172533911659560#editor/target=post;postID=5849984798009986013;onPublishedMenu=posts;onClosedMenu=posts;postNum=0;src=postname

The first and foremost thing that you have to remember if you want to hand tame your budgie is that- just like you it has a brain,it has the power to think and is intelligent enough to understand your actions and intentions.

Next thing is you have to give quite a bit of time if you seriously want to hand tame your budgie. Initially about 10-15 minutes 3-4 times daily which can be adjusted later when your budgie becomes comfortable with you to suit your needs.

Here are the steps which can serve as guide to you for hand taming your budgie:-

1. Start taming with your budgie as early as possible while its still young. You can take the budgie from its mother while its about 2 weeks old and start hand feeding it but it is recommended only for experts. Those with no experience of taming budgies before should start taming only when it is 1 month to 45 days old but not more than 5 months old (it is difficult to tame older budgies).

2. Completely Separate the budgie which you want to hand tame from the rest of the birds. Separate means keep it in a separate cage far away from the other birds so that it cannot hear them. This is important because if you the budgie can hear sounds of other budgies it will not listen to you but will listen to only the other birds even if it is in a separate cage.

3. First talk very softly to your budgie and try to gain its trust. Give it a name and start calling it repeatedly and very softly.

4.Try to feed the budgie its favorite food,it may be seed, some leaves try different foods. First try to feed from outside the cage. Initially it will not show any interest but slowly after some days it will take food from your hands. This may take many days.

5. If the budgie bites you while you are feeding it(which is rare) do not move your hand away instead scold the budgie in a loud voice. It will learn that biting is a bad behavior and slowly stop it.Slowly as your budgie starts taking food from your hand and is no more afraid of follow the next step.

6. In a completely closed room with no big openings release the budgie for a few hours daily. Make sure there is no open places through which the budgie can escape, or any objects like running fans which can kill the budgie. When you release the budgie in your room it will fly around for some time and will eventually come back to its cage to eat or drink water. You can close the cage after releasing the budgie for a few hours. While the budgie is outside its cage try to make it sit on your hand by offering it food. Later you can play with it,teach it new tricks or even teach it to talk.

These are the methods I followed to hand tame my budgies.

How to identify whether your Budgie is Male or Female ?

New Budgie breeders often have this question in their mind when buying new budgies and when having new babies.

Here's the steps fellas:-

To enable you to determine a female budgie from a male budgie you need to look at the color
of the budgie’s "cere". The cere is the area directly above the beak housing the nostrils.

Male budgies (cock) under the age of 4 months have pink ceres (nose). The pink cere turns purple to blue by the time the cock reaches sexual maturity. When the cocks are fertile and ready to breed (This is called being in Breeding Condition), their cere changes into shiny/deep blue colour. When the cock gets out of breeding condition, the cere changes back to its normal blue colour.

However, there are certain mutations of budgies that keep their pink cere throughout their lifetime. Some of those mutations include Recessive Pied, Albino, Lutino.(I will talk about them later).
                                                           Young male budgie
                                                       Adult male budgie
A female budgie (hen) has a blue or white cere with white rings around the nostrils (nose holes) when they are young. As they reach maturity, the cere colour changes to brown or white, or stays a colour of bright blue with white rings around the nostrils. When the hen is fertile and ready to breed, her cere will turn even a darker brown colour and will form flakes/crusts on the cere. When the hen is out of Breeding condition, the colour changes back to its normal white/blue/lighter brown colour.
                                                             Young Female budgie

                                                              Adult Female budgie

Other ways to know and make sure of your budgie's sex is to notice its behavior.
Male budgies are usually much more playful and get on easily with other budgies.
Female budgies are usually more aggressive and munch away at bits and pieces of nesting material like paper.
