What is MUTATION?
Mutation is the type of colour, feather pattern or any distinctive feature a budgie has. Just like we human beings have different races budgies also have different mutations.
Why is it important?
Mutations or colour genetics are important to understand the origins the budgie has. Most importantly some mutations make a budgie really beautiful to look at. Rare mutations increase the value of a budgie to breeders and exhibition breeders.
Now comes the Most Important Part- The different mutations and how to recognize them.
The wildtype (natural-colored or wild occurring) budgerigar's color is called Lightgreen. The original budgie variety is yellow-based with blue feather structure in the body feathers, resulting in the classic green coloration of the main body (yellow+blue=green).
wild type green/classic green
When the yellow colour is absent in some parts it creates a blue colour mutation, when blue is absent it creates yellow mutation.
